Description
The climb begins at the junction of the M521 road with the legendary N18 road (considered the Portuguese inland road - it starts in Guarda and only ends in Ervidel, near Beja, where it connects to the also legendary N2 road). It is halfway between the city of Fundão and the Fundão Sul junction (28) of the A23 highway, with the sign for Alcongosta.
We are in the cherry kingdom. In the first 2 kilometers of the climb, until we reach the village of Alcongosta, we will be surrounded by extensive cherry orchards. In April the landscape is unique with the white of the flowering cherry trees remembering the winter snow. In the months of May and June the trees are full of cherries.
In these first kilometers of ascent the slopes are moderate, not exceeding 6% in the first part, becoming more pronounced as you approach Alcongosta. Arriving at the small village of Alcongosta, known as the Capital of Cherries, we continue on the pavé of a narrow street that crosses the entire village for about 1.200 m, with an average slope of over 7%.
The houses are mostly painted white, with many stone walls forming the border between the village streets and lush green backyards, where olive trees keep company with cherry trees.
The last house of the village also marks the end of the pavé and the beginning of the forest road of Alcongosta, which has a perfect tarmac, helping to overcome the average slope that varies between 6% and 7%. The cherry trees here are being replaced by leafy chestnut and oak trees, which are a valuable help on hotter days.
Upon reaching the last kilometer of the climb, the vegetation becomes lower, allowing us to appreciate the great Cova da Beira valley with the cities of Fundão and Covilhã in the background and the monumental Serra da Estrela up above.
The paved road and the climb end at the entrance to Natural Glamping da Gardunha, where you can combine contact with Nature at the campsite, but with all the glamour of a Geodesic Domes. In this hotel unit you can also recover your strength in its Bar/Restaurant.
Tarmac
During the tarmac sections this is in excellent condition. Crossing of the village of Alcongosta we can count on with a 1.270 m pavé segment. It is a regular pavé, but with an slope of 7%, being the most challenging section of the entire climb.
